Si tratta del primo film di Julien Temple. L’inizio del suo lungo percorso al fianco dei Sex Pistols. In questo suo primo lavoro mostra la band al massimo della sua notorietà.
Sex Pistols Number 1 è una compilation di videoclip per la televisione del 1976 e 1977. Racconta la band e la scena punk rock non solo dal punto di vista musicale ma anche visivo.
Il cortometraggio è stato mostrato durante i concerti dei Sex Pistols dal 3 aprile 1977 (allo Screen on the Green, Londra) fino al 14 gennaio 1978 (l'ultimo concerto a San Francisco). Il film è un documento molto forte sull'effetto che la band aveva sui media; interviste e pezzi dal vivo sono montati con presentatori televisivi che considerano il punk rock una
disgrazia, incluso l’episodio con Bill Grundy.
Il film comprende: l'intervista telefonica a Sid Vicious per "Rodney on the ROQ," 2/13/77; "Nationwide" (BBC) 11/12/76 - "Anarchy in the UK" e fan (Sue Catwoman, Siouxsie, etc.); "Derek Nimmo" (BBC) Marzo 1977 in Seditionaries; Yorkshire TV 12/6/76 intervista con Malcolm McLaren al Leeds; "London Weekend Show" (LWT) 11/28/76 - Janet Street-Porter intervista con la band nell'appartamento di Denmark Street; Caerphilly 12/14/76 - protesta di religiosi; Leeds Polytechnic Dean intervista del 12/6/76 prima dello show; "Today" (Thames) 12/1/76 - Clip del concerto "No Fun" (ripreso il 11/5/76 al Notre Dame Hall) e l’intervista dal vivo con Bill Grundy ; "So It Goes" (Granada) 9/4/76 - "Anarchy in the
UK" (introdotta da Jordan); "God Save the Queen"- registrazione in studio
con giornali con l’immagine della Regina Elisabetta II e dei Sex Pistols, sui titoli di coda che scorrono.
